The work creates the value. Bitcoin is the payment rail or settlement asset. Agree what is being delivered, what it costs, when it is due and what counts as paid before choosing on-chain or Lightning.
Quote a fixed BTC amount or a fiat-denominated amount converted at a clearly stated time/source. If the exchange rate matters, set an invoice expiry.
On-chain settlement trades speed for base-layer finality. Lightning is designed for fast invoice-based payments when both sides use compatible wallets.
For on-chain payments, decide how many confirmations you require for the value at risk. For Lightning, confirm the invoice is settled in your wallet or node.
Payment can land in self-custody or on a custodial platform. That choice changes withdrawal, backup and counterparty risk.
Bitcoin developer documentation describes pricing, requesting payment, verification and refunds as separate steps. Keep those steps explicit in your own invoice or service agreement.
Record the deliverable, due date and whether the price is fixed in BTC or converted from another unit.
For on-chain, use a fresh address or BIP21-style request. For Lightning, the recipient generates an invoice with amount and expiry details.
Do not treat a screenshot or message as settlement. Check the transaction or invoice state directly.
