The short version
Ledger is compelling for people who want hardware-backed key storage with a mature multi-asset ecosystem and increasingly large secure touchscreens. Current products such as Nano Gen5, Flex and Stax use Secure Element chips and Ledger OS, while Ledger Wallet acts as the desktop/mobile interface.
The core trade-off is transparency. Ledger publishes Ledger Wallet and several components, but its operating-system stack is not fully open source. Ledger explains that low-level Secure Element code is restricted by chip-vendor agreements. A buyer should decide whether that hardware-isolation model and vendor-audit approach matches their trust preferences.
Especially attractive if you manage multiple assets or want a touchscreen signer with Bluetooth/NFC options.

How Ledger’s security model works
Ledger stores private keys inside a Secure Element and runs Ledger OS on that protected chip. The device screen is driven from the secure environment so you can inspect transaction details before physically confirming them. The connected phone or computer prepares transactions, while the signer keeps key operations separated from that internet-connected host.
This design targets both remote malware and physical extraction. It still depends on the user checking the screen, protecting recovery material and refusing social-engineering requests for secret words or PINs.
Address verification and transaction review are part of the security model. Blindly approving prompts can defeat the benefit of hardware isolation.

Open source: what is public and what is not
Ledger says Ledger Wallet, the Wallet API, embedded applications, its cryptographic library and several operating-system components are open source or available for review. It also says the full operating system cannot be published because parts of the low-level Secure Element interface are covered by the chip vendor’s intellectual-property restrictions.
That is a real philosophical difference from a project that makes the entire device software stack independently buildable. It does not automatically prove one model safer than the other. It changes where trust sits: more weight is placed on Secure Element certification, vendor controls, internal security work and third-party audits.
Ledger Wallet and Bitcoin use
Ledger Wallet is the companion app for account management, transaction preparation and portfolio functions. For Bitcoin, Ledger documents support for common account types including Native SegWit and Taproot when accounts are created. The hardware signer remains the component that should hold keys and authorize transactions.
For a Bitcoin-only user, the extra multi-chain functionality may be irrelevant. For someone using several networks, the app and embedded-app model can be a practical advantage.
Recovery choices deserve careful reading
Traditional Ledger setup uses recovery material that can restore access to the wallet. Current products also promote Ledger Recovery Key, a separate physical backup accessory, and Ledger continues to offer Ledger Recover as an optional paid subscription service in supported regions. Ledger explicitly describes Recover as optional, not a requirement to use the signer.
The key decision is not whether a feature sounds convenient; it is whether you understand the new trust and failure model it introduces. A recovery service can reduce one type of loss risk while introducing identity, provider and policy dependencies. A physical backup accessory can improve convenience while becoming another object that must be stored and protected correctly.
