LemonBitcoin assessment

The short version

Kraken is a credible first exchange-review candidate for LemonBitcoin’s Europe/CIS research scope because the core claims can be tied to current first-party evidence. In the EEA, Kraken documents a MiCA-regulated service stack through Irish entities; outside the EEA, eligibility and product rules depend on residence. The standard Kraken Pro spot fee schedule is public, Bitcoin can leave via the base chain or Lightning, and Kraken publishes user-verifiable reserve snapshots.

The strongest reason not to overstate the conclusion is custody. Bitcoin on an exchange is controlled within the exchange account and operational stack until you withdraw it. MiCA authorization, Proof of Reserves and security controls are useful evidence layers, not a guarantee against loss, insolvency, phishing, account compromise or policy changes.

Good fit ifYou want a documented custodial venue with transparent Pro fees and BTC withdrawal options, and Kraken is eligible in your country.
Main cautionTier-1 fees are not the cheapest, and exchange custody is still counterparty custody.

Regional eligibility and regulatory context

LemonBitcoin covers Europe and CIS-region countries. Kraken’s current eligibility page says it works with clients around the world with specific prohibited regions. Availability of assets, funding methods and account features can still vary by verified residence, so readers should confirm current eligibility directly before opening an account.

For EEA clients specifically, Kraken’s licensing page identifies three relevant Irish entities. Payward Europe Solutions Limited is a MiCA crypto-asset service provider with Central Bank of Ireland registration C468360. Payward Global Solutions Limited has MiCA registration C559106 to operate a crypto-asset trading platform. Payward Ireland Limited is an e-money institution with registration C453020 for EEA e-money/payment services. Non-EEA European and CIS-region readers should use Kraken’s current global/local terms rather than assuming EEA rules apply to them.

What regulation does not mean.

A license or authorization is regulatory evidence, not a promise of investment returns or a state guarantee of crypto balances. Protection, product access and complaint/compensation frameworks differ by jurisdiction.

KYC: not an anonymous Bitcoin on-ramp

Kraken requires verification before normal funding and trading. Its KYC documentation says all clients must complete a KYC questionnaire, and verification can require name, date of birth, physical address, occupation, identity documents and — depending on residence — proof of address or face/liveness checks.

If your requirement is to acquire Bitcoin without identity verification, Kraken does not fit that requirement. If you accept regulated exchange KYC, the more relevant question becomes how much personal and transaction data you are comfortable placing with a custodial intermediary.

Fees: use Kraken Pro pricing, not a vague “low fee” label

The current standard Kraken Pro Spot Crypto Tier 1 is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker. Higher qualifying spot volume or assets on platform can reduce those rates. Kraken also operates a separate maker-rebate schedule for selected pairs, so a promotional maker number should not be presented as the universal starting fee.

Instant Buy and quote-based experiences are a different pricing path. Kraken's own fee documentation distinguishes them from Pro order-book maker/taker pricing. A useful Bitcoin comparison should therefore specify the interface and order type, not just the brand name.

Illustration, not a quote

A €1,000 executed trade at 0.40% is €4 in trading fee; at 0.80% it is €8. That excludes spread/slippage, funding costs and the later BTC withdrawal cost.

Bitcoin withdrawals and Lightning

Kraken supports Bitcoin withdrawals on-chain and over the Lightning Network. The public withdrawal table checked for this publication showed a 0.00001 BTC fee and 0.000212 BTC minimum for base-chain Bitcoin, and a 0 BTC fee with 0.00001 BTC minimum for Bitcoin Lightning. Kraken warns that network fees and minimums can change, so the confirmation screen remains the final source of truth.

The numbers above are a publication snapshot, not a permanent promise. Recheck the live funding page immediately before withdrawing and again on scheduled editorial refreshes.

  • Choose the correct network. On-chain Bitcoin and Lightning are not interchangeable address formats.
  • Verify the destination. Compare the receiving address or Lightning request in the destination wallet.
  • Do a small test. Especially before moving a meaningful long-term balance.
  • Expect holds in some funding flows. Kraken documents temporary withdrawal holds after certain purchase/deposit methods.

Custody and Proof of Reserves

Kraken is a custodial exchange. Its security documentation describes a mix of cold and hot wallet infrastructure; that is operational security inside Kraken's custody model, not the same as holding keys yourself.

The strongest transparency evidence in this review is Kraken’s current Proof of Reserves page. At the time checked, the latest snapshot shown was 30 June 2026 with a 102.9% BTC reserve ratio. Kraken provides account-level verification tooling that lets a customer verify inclusion in the Merkle structure for supported snapshot assets.

PoR evidence boundary

A reserve snapshot is useful, but it is still point-in-time evidence. It does not replace full financial statements, prove future liquidity, eliminate liabilities/governance risk, or make an exchange equivalent to self-custody.

Account security: good controls, but the user still matters

Kraken supports withdrawal 2FA, passkeys/FIDO-capable authentication and Global Settings Lock. GSL is particularly useful as a delay/control layer because it can prevent account-setting changes even if sign-in credentials are compromised. Kraken also documents step-up liveness checks for some sensitive actions.

Kraken’s security-support material checked in August 2026 states that its security program is validated against ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2. Treat certifications as evidence about controls, not as a guarantee that losses or account compromise cannot occur.

Incident history also needs precise wording. In a 2016 security notice, Kraken discussed compromised customer accounts linked to credential reuse/phishing and said it had no evidence that Kraken itself had been breached. That is relevant account-security history, but it is not proof that a platform can never experience a security incident.

Pros and cons for a Bitcoin-focused regional user

What looks strong

  • Clear EEA licensing footprint with Irish MiCA entities.
  • Public Kraken Pro maker/taker tiers.
  • On-chain Bitcoin and Lightning withdrawal support.
  • User-verifiable Proof of Reserves with a recent 2026 snapshot.
  • Useful account controls: passkeys/2FA and GSL.

What to think about

  • 0.40% / 0.80% standard Tier-1 Pro fees are meaningful for small-volume users.
  • Exact withdrawal cost and some product restrictions are dynamic.
  • KYC is required; this is not a privacy-minimal on-ramp.
  • PoR and regulation do not eliminate custodial/counterparty risk.
  • This review is documentation-based and has not been validated through a funded live-account test.

Who is Kraken a reasonable fit for?

Consider Kraken if: Kraken currently serves your country, you accept KYC, want a documented custodial venue, prefer a visible order-book fee schedule, and value the option to withdraw Bitcoin by base chain or Lightning.

Look elsewhere if: you need no-KYC acquisition, prioritize the lowest possible beginner-tier trading fee, or plan to leave long-term Bitcoin on an exchange despite wanting self-custody.

For a self-custody workflow, the exchange should be treated as a temporary conversion/settlement venue rather than the final storage destination.

Next step

Verify the live terms, then decide where custody should end.

Fees, eligibility and funding rails can change. Check the official venue immediately before opening or funding an account, then use self-custody guidance if the Bitcoin is not meant to stay on an exchange.

FAQ

Common Kraken questions

Is Kraken available across Europe and the CIS region?

Not uniformly. Kraken says it serves clients globally with specified prohibited regions. Product, asset and funding restrictions can still vary by residence, so eligibility should be checked for the user’s country before account opening.

Does Kraken require KYC?

Yes. Kraken says identity verification is required to fund/trade and that all clients complete its KYC questionnaire. Exact evidence requirements can vary by country.

Does Kraken support Bitcoin Lightning withdrawals?

Yes. Kraken publishes a step-by-step guide for BTC deposits and withdrawals using Lightning for verified accounts.

Is Kraken Proof of Reserves the same as an audit?

No. It is useful point-in-time reserve and account-inclusion evidence, but LemonBitcoin does not treat it as a full financial-statement audit or a guarantee of future solvency.
