The short version
Bitvavo has enough current first-party evidence for an indexable review. Its AFM/MiCA authorization, supported-country list, KYC flow, public spot-fee schedule, live BTC withdrawal table, Lightning status, custody structure and selected-asset Proof of Reserves are all documented.
The most important limitation for LemonBitcoin’s broader regional audience is eligibility. Bitvavo’s current supported-country article is limited to a defined European/SEPA list, so readers outside that list should not infer availability from MiCA authorization or from LemonBitcoin’s wider editorial coverage.
Decision snapshot
| Legal / regulatory context | Bitvavo B.V. is licensed by the Dutch AFM as a MiCA crypto-asset service provider under registration number 41000010. |
|---|---|
| Country availability | Current help documentation lists a defined set of supported SEPA-country residents. Availability must be checked against the current country list and live signup flow. |
| KYC | Required. Bitvavo says identity verification includes a valid ID and a short video. |
| Category A EUR fees | 0.15% maker / 0.25% taker at €0+ 30-day crypto trading volume; lower tiers apply at higher volume. Other fee categories use separate schedules. |
| BTC withdrawal | Fee page checked 28 Aug 2026: 0.000019 BTC fee and 0.000019 BTC minimum. Bitvavo says blockchain withdrawal fees can vary. |
| Lightning | Unsupported in the current Bitvavo help documentation; BTC deposits and withdrawals use the Bitcoin main chain. |
| Custody | Custodial. Bitvavo terms describe legal and operational segregation of user crypto assets and the use of separate omnibus custody wallets; most user crypto is described as held in cold storage via custody providers. |
| Proof of Reserves | The Network Firm LLP selected-asset attestation; public page shows BTC at 100% for the 31 Mar 2026 snapshot and offers customer verification. |
| Account protection | Bitvavo documents 2FA, address-book/withdrawal verification and a conditional Account Guarantee up to €100,000 for eligible unauthorized-access cases. The guarantee is not a deposit-guarantee scheme or universal insurance. |
Regional eligibility and regulatory context
Bitvavo B.V. states that it is licensed by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) under registration number 41000010 as a MiCA crypto-asset service provider. Its current trading rules say the relevant trading, custody/administration and transfer services may be provided across EEA jurisdictions, while Bitvavo can still restrict particular markets or residents.
Product authorization is not the same as customer eligibility. Bitvavo’s current supported-country help article lists a defined set of European/SEPA countries and says residents outside the supported region cannot create an account. For LemonBitcoin’s broader Europe/CIS audience, that country list is the practical eligibility boundary.
Use the current Bitvavo country list and live signup flow as the final check. Help-center pages can be updated at different times, so an older country-specific article should not override the current account flow without verification.
KYC and payment setup
Identity verification is required. Bitvavo’s March 2026 verification guide says users upload a valid identity document and record a short video. Supported document types vary by jurisdiction.
Bitvavo is SEPA-oriented. Its documentation also describes IBAN verification and country-dependent payment methods, so funding convenience can vary even among eligible countries.
Trading fees: unusually clear public pricing
For Category A crypto/EUR markets, Bitvavo’s current fee page lists 0.15% maker / 0.25% taker for the €0+ 30-day crypto-volume tier. Higher-volume tiers are lower.
Separate schedules apply to USDC markets and specified stablecoin pairs. Do not copy the Category A EUR rates onto every Bitvavo market. Bitvavo’s authenticated API can return the current fee tier for an account and market.
Bitcoin withdrawal: live published fee, no Lightning
The Bitvavo fee page checked 28 August 2026 listed 0.000019 BTC as both the Bitcoin withdrawal fee and minimum amount. Bitvavo also says crypto withdrawal fees can vary with blockchain capacity, so the live fee page and confirmation screen should be checked again before withdrawing.
Bitvavo’s help center explicitly says Bitcoin Lightning deposits and withdrawals are not supported; BTC transfers currently use the Bitcoin main chain.
Custody and Proof of Reserves
Bitvavo’s current terms state that user digital assets are legally and operationally separated from Bitvavo’s own assets and held through separate pooled custody wallets, with a separate foundation used to create legal segregation. Bitvavo also states that most user crypto is held in cold storage through custody providers, while a portion remains in hot wallets for operational liquidity.
Bitvavo’s Proof of Reserves page says The Network Firm LLP performs a third-party attestation for selected in-scope assets and lets customers verify their included balances. The public page shows a 100% BTC reserve ratio as of 31 March 2026.
This is selected-asset, point-in-time evidence. It is useful transparency evidence, but it is not treated as a full financial-statement audit, a deposit guarantee, or proof of future liquidity/solvency.
Security and account-protection evidence
Bitvavo documents two-factor authentication, withdrawal-address verification and security checks around external withdrawals. Its Account Guarantee can reimburse eligible users up to €100,000 in specified unauthorized-access cases, subject to conditions including KYC and authenticator-app 2FA.
The guarantee is a contractual Bitvavo program, not a regulatory deposit-guarantee scheme and not universal insurance. Custody and account-security controls reduce some risks but do not remove exchange counterparty risk; withdrawing long-term BTC to self-custody changes that risk model.
Pros and cons for a Bitcoin-focused regional user
What looks strong
- Public 0.15% / 0.25% entry-tier Category A EUR fee schedule.
- Live published BTC withdrawal fee/minimum with a freshness date.
- User-verifiable third-party selected-asset Proof of Reserves.
- AFM/MiCA authorization with documented custody and transfer permissions.
- Published custody segregation and account-protection controls.
What to think about
- Lightning is not supported.
- Customer eligibility is limited to Bitvavo’s documented supported-country list, not LemonBitcoin’s full regional audience.
- Withdrawal fees are dynamic and can change with blockchain conditions.
- PoR and the Account Guarantee do not eliminate custodial/counterparty risk.
Who is Bitvavo a reasonable fit for?
Consider Bitvavo if: you live in a currently supported country, trade EUR markets, accept KYC/custody, and value a public fee schedule plus selected-asset PoR verification.
Look elsewhere if: you need Lightning, live outside its documented eligibility footprint, or want your long-term Bitcoin under your own keys rather than an exchange custodian.
